The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, is one of the most iconic marine protected areas in the world.
At the initiative of the Philippine Department of Tourism, the Andromède Océanologie team explored the depths of this Philippine pristine site for the first time in June 2024 using STEED, an innovative system developed by Thomas Pavy.
STEED (Synchronized Transect for Exploration and Ecosystem Description) enables rapid and efficient data collection on fish, benthos, and corals in deep ecosystems, reducing exploration time with the help of a SUEX XJS DPV.

The study revealed the presence of a deep zone (-60 m to -90m) with high biodiversity and abundance that has never been described before in this area and clearly disctinct from the well known shallow zone (-10 m to -15m). It also illustrates the presence of long-lived organisms, indicating a stable and well-preserved environment.
This expedition represents a significant step forward in understanding mesophotic ecosystems, which are crucial for marine conservation.
